Tadiran lithium thionyl chloride (LiSOCl2) batteries power a wide variety of medical devices, including automatic external defibrillators, surgical power tools, robotic cameras, RFID asset tags, infusion pumps, bone growth stimulators, glucose monitors, blood oxygen meters, and cauterizers. They also power the devices that monitor the handling and transport of goods and materials through the cold chain.
Tadiran bobbin-type LiSOCl2 batteries are preferred for use in the cold chain because they deliver the highest specific energy (energy per unit weight) and energy density (energy per unit volume) of any battery type. Lithium cells, all of which use a non-aqueous electrolyte, also have nominal open circuit voltages of between 1.7 and 3.9V. Lithium cells also feature extended operating temperature ranges, made possible by the absence of water and the chemical and physical stability of the materials.
Bobbin-type Li/SOCl2 cells offer the widest temperature range, making them ideal for use with high temperature autoclave sterilization as well as in the cold chain, where consistent temperatures as low as -80°C need to be maintained in order to preserve tissue samples, transplant organs, medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and food that are frozen or shipped in dry ice. Tadiran tested its bobbin-type Li/SOCl2 cells in a cryogenic chamber, subjecting these batteries to progressively lower temperatures down to -100°C, and the cells continued to operate as necessary.
Of all available lithium chemistries, bobbin-type Li/SOCl2 (lithium thionyl chloride) stands apart as being particularly well-suited for applications requiring a steady low current (micro amps to low milli amps) for extended period of time (up to 40 years) due to its high energy density, high capacity, and very low self-discharge rate.
Tadiran LiSOCl2 chemistry also performs well in extreme heat, making them ideal for use with autoclave or chemical sterilization systems. For example, Awarepoint battery-powered radio frequency identification (RFID) real time location systems (RTLS) continually monitor the location and status of medical equipment throughout medical facilities without having to remove the battery prior to autoclave sterilization.
